Multi-Cultural Music

Instruments, traditions, sounds, and styles are all very different depending upon which part of the world you go to.  Can you find some instruments that you have never seen before?  Do you see any that look like traditional instruments?  It is important to learn to respect other cultures and we can do this through music.

Visit this site to see many different pictures of multi-cultural instruments, view video clips of different cultures, and learn details from several different places.  There are even some links that teach you how to make your own instruments, as well as links to other fun activities.  

On this site you will be able to explore and listen to kids songs from around the world.  Do they sound different from songs you know?  Be sure to explore several different examples from around the world.

 

Help Maya and Miguel mix music using different world instruments.  Can you create a one-of-a-kind sound?  Keep trying different combinations to see what sounds the best to you.

Come investigate four instruments from around the world including the jembe, berimbau, steel pan, and the cajon.  Not only can you hear each instrument but you'll also learn where they originated, what common item they originated from, and about the musician.  

This site will help you hear the difference in music throughout the world.  This map highlights 14 different countries or regions and plays music from each.  Your job is to drag the correct music to the original land.  Put your ear to the test!  

Visit National Geographic and visit any region in the world (which are listed alphabetically at the top).  You will not only get to see videos of musicians playing instruments but learn about the culture as well.  This is a very comprehensive site and you are sure to find some interesting facts!
