Pitch

Pitch is one of the main elements of music.  It is used in reading music, playing an instrument, singing a song, arranging, and composing.  If it wasn't for pitch, we wouldn't be able to write music down or know how to translate a song to a musical instrument or the voice.  Learning to read pitches is a very basic and important piece of learning about music.

Watch this short 5-minute video to discover the basics of pitch.  Learn about high and low sounds, learn about the sounds in the world around you and even play a guessing game with sounds and instrument pitches.

Here is another short definition of pitch and then you can play some pitches on your own using the interactive piano.  When you play the pitches, they also show up on the staff - be sure to see which line or space they are on!

Stop by here to learn about the science of pitch and sound.  Blow into a virtual bottle, strum a guitar, and bang a drum on high and low pitches.  Can you figure out what changes the pitch?

Play this game to test your pitch memory.  You will start by creating your very own 3 pitch melody and then picking out the correct one when it plays your song back.

Test your knowledge of pitches on the staff (note names) in this fun game. Simply read the pitch and click on the note names.  Can you get them all right?

Do you like science?  Here is a project you and your parents can do together. Follow the guide on this site to conduct your own science experiment involving pitch.  See if you can make high and low pitches and even create your own bottle composition!
